Colors and Shapes Recognition

All the following activities were carried out over the period of time since Dan Dan was young until now which categorized under the same topics therefore I tried to put it all under one post for easier reference. In fact, i truly believe spend a little effort everydays (15-30min)-sow, for all sort of learning activities including reading, it reap wonder benefits in the children grown up years...

Finally mummy saw this Circle Tangram selling at Harbour front Shopping Mall (one of the bookstore) after aiming to purchase it for such a long time. It only cost S$6.90.

Just in case you do not know what is Tangram.The Tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of seven flats shape, called tans, which are put together to form shapes. The objective of the puzzle is to form a specific shape (given only outline or silhouette) using all seven pieces, which may not overlap.

It is great tools for problem solving and logical thinking skills. The answers of the game can be found at the end page of the book. However try it first before seeking for help...

A cute little colorful wine cups from S$2.00 Diaso. Material uses for counting and color recognition purposes. Danzel happily played with it. After sorting it out the color, he used it for stacking too...With all the little activities occupied him, mummy, me can be more stress-free... as he is highly attention demend child....therefore nowadays mummy got to think more and more home learning activities to carry out with him during weekdays (after works) and weekends (mostly Saturday)

Material used:-
1) Colorful Ice Cream Stick
2) Non-slip mat

Early in the weekend morning, color sorting session with Daddy. After the sorting, we used the stick to build simplify HDB flat :) Although he already know all his color by now however further with the play of all these games, it helps improve focusing, concentration and patience. It is always no harm to create meaningful activities/games rather than the child wonder about whole day long or worst facing the squarish box for hours.

More counting activity before sleeping...after the counting...as usual i will get him to sort according to the color. He was so happy after completion of the task.

The main idea of the following activity is for counting purposes. After getting him to put in the ball into the net by counting 1,2,3-10,I got him to take it out by color instead because by taking out the balls from the net is more difficult therefore will slow down the counting momentum therefore I switch it to color so that he can take his time to slowly dig out the color that I call out from the net.....

More works needed for grown up toddlers. A little challenging activities can be created. After knowing all the shapes,colors and sizes, it is time for some words recognition. I got Dan sorted out those shapes by the printed out wordings stated (More in qty hence more patience require during the sorting) After the sorting, point to the word and lead him to follow you read through the words for few times.
Shape Sorting Toy - Dan got this 18 shapes sorted out way before he turned 18mths...hehe but beside using it as a shape sorter, sometime I will use it for his color activities too. It is also one of the great shape learning tool that worth for investing which I think it cost at only S$9.90

More effort needed for such activities, as you will need to source for the site, print,laminate,cut and paste...However once it is created, it can keep up for quite sometime or even when second pop out...hehe... It can be used for shapes as well as color activities.

Building Blocks is a must for every households with toddlers. It is a great tool for fine motor skills,logical thinking skill, problem solving skills, colors and shapes. It can even be used for Math activities too.

1) Colorful cups
2) Anythings that same color to the cups

Color Matching Fun...

Material used:-
1) Ziplock Bag
2) Color Paint
3) Corn Flour Mix Water

Mix the flour with the water in the z.bag and drip some color paint into it and let your child see the flour slowly turn from white to the color that you drip into the bag, you may mix even more than 1 color for older kids.

Material used:-
1) Paper Bags (Act as mystery bag)
2) Color Objects (Depend on desire topic)

Place different color of objects in each paper bag, it can be fruits,toys,vege as long as something with color. Call out the color and let him browse through each bag to locate the color that you want. He may take out the wrong item, gently tell him :''this is not the x color, we are looking for y color so you may put the object back into the bag and continue the search. However take only 2 attempt, if he still fail, you should take out the color for him by now before he crust your paper bags away....

The simple game helps in color & sizes recognition!!

The activities are usually simple and easy to follow through without too many materials needed for younger children. It was an unconstructive played before Dan turned 18mths old therefore most of the activities can be ready 10-15 prior to the play without much brain juice needed for planning. The materials can be anythings within the house.

Material used:-
1) Different color of small objects (preferably primary color-red,yellow,blue)
2) Containers with Lids

The color objects can be displayed on the floor (not too complicated as it will defeat the confidence of young children and hence frust them from continue with the activity), call out the color and ask them to put the object into the designated container for all the same color tone that can be found on the floor. Aft all objects are in the container, let them cover it up with the lids and follow with stacking/shaking...

Material used: -
1) An unused Box (Drill the slots- Depend on how many color markers)
2) Color Markers

The game can be played by naming the color while your child is inserting the color marker into the slots and it also enhance fine motor skill, detailing and patience through the inserting of the markers to the available slots.
